Although he was strongly opposed to the carbon tax, he said that would not stop him bringing forward amendments to “this flawed tax”.

While the government had claimed only 500 companies would pay the carbon tax, including a carbon price on off-road diesel use would affect thousands of companies, he said.

Climate Change Minister Greg Combet said the government was not inclined to agree with the amendment. He said a broad-based carbon price would reduce greenhouse gas emissions at the lowest overall cost to the economy and the bills applied an effective carbon price to off-road energy use outside of agriculture, fisheries and forestry to provide an effective price signal relative to the carbon content of the fuel used.

He said the flow-through of the increased prices had been designed to be competitively neutral and it was not expected that companies would have to absorb the costs.

Somebody has to absorb the cost, it does not magically vanish into thin air. If it is not the top 500 companies, then it is YOU. This is nothing but a money grab for the government, they themselves have admitted none of this will have ANY affect on the climate. That absolves them of any responsibility for this tax actually doing anything at all apart from raising revenue. We are not reponsible for the weather with a trace gas of a few parts per million.
